Boosting independent careers in science.

History of the Boehringer Ingelheim Prize until 2025.

The Boehringer Ingelheim Prize was established in 1969 at the initiative of the Boehringer and von Baumbach family, in collaboration with University Medical Centre Mainz.

Its purpose was to honour promising scientists for outstanding publication achievements, while simultaneously strengthening medical research in Mainz. Originally endowed by the Boehringer Ingelheim company, the prize has been funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Stiftung since 1995.

Until 2025, the prize was awarded annually to recognise scientific publication achievements in the fields of clinical and theoretical medicine. The total prize money of 30,000 EUR was divided equally between one clinical and one theoretical medical researcher from University Medical Centre Mainz.

Over the decades, the prize has identified and honoured scientists with great potential. The soundness of these selections is reflected in the many awardees who now hold or held leading positions in research, clinical practice, or industry.
