Scientific excellence counts.

The selection process.
Successful applications to the funding programmes of the Boehringer Ingelheim Stiftung are selected in multi-stage peer-review processes based on their scientific excellence.
Exploration Grants and Rise up!
The office of the Boehringer Ingelheim Stiftung first verifies that a submitted application meets the respective programme’s formal criteria. If it does, the foundation then seeks written assessments by usually two external experts in the relevant research field. These peer reviewers may be from within Germany or from abroad. Subsequently, the foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board scrutinizes and discusses all applications and the external reviewers’ assessments before submitting its recommendations as to which applicants should be awarded funding and in what amount. The foundation’s Executive Committee then decides on whom to fund with what amount based on the recommendations of the Scientific Advisory Board. The selection process usually takes around 6 months.
CoMove
As a first step, the foundation’s office verifies that a submitted application meets all formal criteria. In agreement with the foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board, it selects applications that will move to step 2 of the selection process. Applications that have successfully passed step 1 will be sent to up to 5 external peer reviewers. Based on the results of written peer reviews, selected applications will be moved to step 3. Applicants whose proposals have successfully passed step 2 will be invited to a personal interview via videoconference by a Selection Board. The Selection Board consists of members of the foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board and external peer reviewers. The decision to grant funds is made by the Executive Committee of the Boehringer Ingelheim Stiftung based on the recommendations made by the Selection Board. We expect the selection process to take around 4-5 months.
