The selection process.
How are applications to the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation’s funding programmes evaluated?
Successful applications to the Rise up!, Plus 3 and Exploration Grants programmes are selected by a multi-stage peer-review process for their scientific excellence.
The office of the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation first verifies that a submitted application meets the respective programme’s formal criteria. If it does, the foundation then seeks the assessment of usually two external experts in the relevant research field. These peer reviewers may be from within Germany or from abroad. Subsequently, the foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board scrutinizes and discusses all applications and the external reviewers' assessments before submitting its recommendations as to which applicants should be awarded funding and in what amount. The foundation’s Executive Committee then decides on whom to fund with what amount based on the recommendations of the Scientific Advisory Board. This selection process generally takes around 6 months.
