Paving the way for a new institute. The Leibniz Institute for Resilience Research.
The Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation funds the Leibniz Institute for Resilience Research (LIR) with a total of 8.65 million euros between 2017 and 2029. The LIR, formerly the German Resilience Center (DRZ), was founded in 2014 as a central unit of the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz and the University Medical Center Mainz. During the first phase of funding by the foundation from 2017 to 2020, the DRZ was converted to a legally independent, non-university institution. In January 2020, the DRZ has been accepted as a member of the Leibniz Association and has been renamed as Leibniz Institute for Resilience Research (LIR). With this, an important milestone was reached in securing long-term funding of the institute and for resilience research in Mainz in general.
With a second phase of funding from 2020 to 2029, the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation further supports the development of the LIR towards an internationally recognized research institute. Scientists at the LIR aim to understand how and why some people maintain or regain their psychological health during or following traumatic events. Funding from the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation supports LIR's research on the mechanisms of resilience from a neuroscientific point of view. In addition, the LIR develops appropriate interventions to promote resilience, and to work towards changing living and working conditions to strengthen resilience.
