Adrian Krainer is awarded the 250,000 EUR Heinrich Wieland Prize in recognition of his groundbreaking discoveries on how cells modify genetic messages before producing proteins – a process known as pre-mRNA splicing – and for applying this knowledge to develop the first effective therapy for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a genetic disorder and, until recently, the leading genetic cause of death in young children.
The award ceremony will take place on Thursday, 11 December 2025, in Munich.
